Aim of this thesis was to explore the possibility of integrating a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) into a new upgrade of PHENIX detector at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory called sPHENIX. TPC is a gas detector that can provide a three-dimensional position reconstruction of a particle coming from a collision. This detector displays good properties in high-multilicity events such as the ones in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and it can give information about particle’s identity and trajectory. In this thesis some basic concepts of the theory of quantum chromodynamics and quark-gluon plasma are shortly introduced. Afterwords an overview of the current PHENIX detector as well as of the future sPHENIX upgrade are represented. Future upgrade sPHENIX will focus on measuring physical properties of the new state of matter which is called quark-gluon plasma. Observables which will be measured impose certain physical requirements and resolution constrainds on future detector subsystems. The core of this thesis are two aspects of research of the future sPHENIX TPC: one aspect are GEANT4 detector simulations which provided us with information about momentum resolution of future chamber. The other aspect was examining the operation of GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) detector which is a multiplication element for TPC electron signal. This experimental work was performed in the Heavy Ion Laboratory at Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Results of the work represented in this thesis are one of the steps in characterization of possible sPHENIX detector subsystems before the final proposal, construction and installation at RHIC collider which is expected in the year 2020.
