Alternative oxidase is a component of mitohondrial respiratory chain in plants, but it is also found in some plastids such as chloroplasts. It is not only present in plants, as it was originally meant. It is already found in some animals. Expression of alternative oxidase is closely associated with various stress conditions, which leads to the conclusion that it is important in survival in such conditions, but also in protecting plant tissues from the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species. It is supposed that it was developed during evolution as an adaptation of plant and animal organisms to life on land. Today it known that alternative oxidase is present in a great number of plant species and also in some animal oragnisms. It could be expected that the knowledge about its role will be completed in further investigations.
