Seahorses are marine fishes and they belong to the family Syngnathidae. Their look and behaviour is much different in comparison to the other fishes. Fishes that belong to the order Syngnathiformes are special because only the mail becomes pregnant. Male cares the eggs in his brood pouch. Today, we recognise 49 species of seahorses, but probably this is not the final number. Seahorses are threatened by overexploitation for tradicional medicines, aquarium fishes and souvenirs. Also, many human activites are degrading and destroying their habitats. Seahorses are vulnerable to overexploitation because of their behaviour and ecology. These fishes are important predators on benthic organisms, so removing them may well disrupt ecosystems. All seahorse species are listed in CITES Appendix II and IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Listing in Appendix II is intended to ensure that future use of the species is undertaken in a sustainable manner.
