Abstract

This seminar paper presented research results of freshwater molluscs distribution and species composition of Viljevo village and surrounding area. The aim of research was determination and indexing of species present in this area and the research took place from February to August of 2009. Six sites were chosen for analysis, based upon different environmental conditions and characteristics. I found the total of 31 freshwater mollusc species, 19 of which were gastropods, and 12 were bivalves. Among other species that are common in this area, I found Unio crassus – highly protected regional species, and three species of invasive non-indigenous bivalves - Anodonta woodiana, Corbicula fluminea and Dreissena polymorpha. Presence of these invasive species in the area of Viljevo is quite worrying and therefore I plan to monitor this area in following years. I also plan to continue the inventarisation process because it's highly likely that my previous research has not encompassed all of the existing species. The final aim of my research in this area is the first complete list of freshwater molluscs species of Viljevo area.
