Abstract

Central Istria is a rural area located near the sea, which is largely characterized by historic towns and villages and rich historic, architectural, culinary and cultural heritage of the rural landscape. With diversified offer that promises peace, natural beauty, biodiversity, traditional values, ecologically grown food and gastronomic diversity, the central region has a great potential in the development of rural tourism as well as other forms of selective tourism, and a good geographical location and road links between Europe and the Mediterranean, makes central Istria very accessible. Since the mid-90s, rural Istria has recorded a steady growth in the number of arrivals and overnight stays, and in recent years has been recorded data where the increase in comparison to the previous year was even higher than the increase of famous maritime destination. This only confirms the fact that people, with the development of urban and industrial environments, have an increasing need to stay in the countryside.
