Abstract

The paper analyzes the geological, natural - geographic and socio - geographic characteristics of the study area, in order to analyze the impact of the quarries on the environment. The area has been described in terms of nature conservation, legal frameworks and categories of the impact on the environment. The actual state of the quarries in the Nature Park Medvednica has been displayed through cartographic, pictorial and tabular sources. Twelve quarries have been specified, described and analyzed. It has been described how to reduce the negative impacts of active and inactive quarries on the environment. Recovery and reassign of space, fencing, continuous monitoring and education of the population in the area along with cooperation with local communities have been presented as the main objectives in order to prevent possible negative effects of the quarries onto the environment.
