Abstract

The demographic development of Gorski kotar is largely a reflection of unfavourable natural, geographic and socioeconomic factors, which have been present - to a lesser or greater degree - from the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately, the general depopulation of Gorski kotar has been gaining increasing momentum and has become especially intense in the last twenty years. It is the result of emigration and natural depopulation, accompanied by intensive ageing of the population. One factor largely contributing to this are poor economic circumstances present throughout almost the entire region of Gorski kotar. The ever increasing workforce deficit is limiting economic development, and each day there are fewer opportunities for implementing any type of economic programme aimed at reviving Gorski kotar. All population structures are showing unfavourable characteristics which will cause the regressive demographic development to continue in the form of population loss, decreased birth rate and erosion of all demographic and economic structures
