Abstract

The Croatian War of Independence is a very significant part of the Croatian history and geography, for that reason it should be the subject of research and study as a part of geography classes in primary and secondary schools. It is important because of all geographical causes and consequences (the demographic picture and the Croatian economy). At this moment, it is not a topic that is covered neither in primary nor in secondary schools. Its necessity comes from the fact that the war was extremely important for developing national feelings (the sense of belonging to a nation and patriotism) and general culture, considering that geography is one of the subjects which promote general culture and national feelings. One of the most important features is the field study, which enables further research and study of the subject. This thesis deals with the applicability of the subject matter regarding the Croatian War of Independence in primary and secondary school textbooks, and its necessity, especially in the eighth grade of primary school, the fourth year of secondary school (gymnasium and school of economics) and in the second grade of vocational schools.
