Abstract

BIRC5 gene and its protein product survivin has an important role in the process of apoptosis. In healthy tissues survivin is expressed only during embryonal development but it is not expressed in differentiated tissues of adult organisms. It is expressed in many tumors and its expression is linked to development of tumors, their recurrence and lower survival. I studied polymorphisms in promoter region, exon 4 and 3'UTR region of BIRC5 gene in different types of ovarian tumors using heteroduplex analysis method and DNA sequencing. I found 15 polymorphisms out of which c.9809T>C has statistical significance in cancer samples compared to controls, and c.-683C>T is newly discovered. Frequency of other polymorphisms match reference values. It appears that BIRC5 polyphormisms do not have a significant role in developing ovarian tumors apart from c.9809T>C, but it is possible that a larger sample would show different results.
