Abstract

There are four species of the subgenus Eucarabus in Croatia: Carabus (Eucarabus) arvensis, Carabus (Eucarabus) catenulatus, Carabus (Eucarabus) parreyssi and Carabus (Eucarabus) ulrichi. The distribution of these species in Croatia is presented and accordingly made in to the distribution maps. Species Carabus (Eucarabus) catenulatus and Carabus (Eucarabus) parreyssi are endemic to Alpine-Dinaric area. By measuring the characteristics of the body it was shown how they are changing with the change of altitude within species Carabus (Eucarabus) catenulatus and Carabus (Eucarabus) parreyssi. According to the measured characteristics it was pointed out to the morphological differences between these two endemic species. According to the results of the measured body characteristics a key was made to distinguish and determine these morphologically very similar species, which would supplement the descriptions in the existing European keys for Carabidae.
