Abstract

The present study is the first one that provides data on the biological and ecological characteristics of the endemic species Phoxinellus pseudalepidotus, including population structure, age and growth, condition, reproduction and diet. The study was conducted onto 1200 specimens in the area of Mostarsko blato during 2009. Since this is an endemic species, most of the specimens were taken back into the water after the performed length and weight measurements. Total lengths of analyzed specimens ranged between 2.7 to 11.5 cm (6.4±0.8 cm), and their weight from 0.1 g to 15.0 g (3.1±1.2 g). Length-weight relationships indicates negative allometry for all population (b = 0.491), for females (b = 0.491) and males (b = 0.489). Phoxinellus pseudalepidotus is a short-lived species with a maximum life span of four years. It becomes sexually mature in its first year, and spawns several times during the reproductive season, which lasts from the end of January until the end of May. Fecundity ranged between 965 and 4740 oocytes. It feeds on insect larvae, other aquatic invertebrates and plant material. The growth of Phoxinellus pseudalepidotus was determined (Linf = 15.11 cm; K = 0.322; t0 = -0.15) according to von Bertalanffy growth model. The value of the coefficient of natural mortality (M) was 0.769, and the coefficient of total mortality (Z) was 0.737. The present study provides insight into the spreading, biological and ecological characteristics of Phoxinellus pseudalepidotus representing new and original scientific contribution to the knowledge about this endemic species. The results obtained in this study significant contribution to biological science and represent the basis for undertaking more effective measures to protect this species, as well as the guidelines for further research on this species and locality.
