Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic dissorder with high growth rate. The present study was designed to investigate the possible antidiabetic and protective effect of water extract of propolis against alloxan-induced oxidative damage in diabetic mice. Type 1 diabetes was induced in mice by injection alloxan in dose of 75 mg kg-1 bwt iv. After 2 days appears to increase glucose levels in alloxan treated animals, and 10th days of the initiation of alloxan show significant decrease of body weight compared to a healthy control group. Treatment of diabetic mice with water extract of propolis in dose of 50 mg kg-1 for seven days was effective in maintaining the body weight of animals, the survival of animals, increasing the functional activity of macrophages of peritoneal cavity and maintain the structure and function of liver cells while the efficiency of the cells and kidney tissue was insignificant. Additionally comet assay results show that treatment diabetic animals with water extract of propolis reduces the alloxan-induced DNA damage to lymphocytes. The results indicate that aqueous propolis has promising effects in reducing the negative consequences of developing diabetes.
