Abstract

Diabetes is characterized by the inability of the body to produce and/or properly use the hormone insulin. The result is an increased concentration of glucose in the blood. We used NOD mice that spontaneously developed type 1 diabetes and received insulin for the regulation of the disease. Despite today’s therapy glucose level was higher than recommended, and therefore it was necessary to take advantage of some other physiological processes in order to regulate the disease more efficiently. We investigated the ability to inhibit glucose absorption by the treatment with calcium zeolite A. The property of sodium binding was used because it is known that sodium is required for the entry of glucose into the cells. The hypothesis was that we would reduce the concentration of sodium ions in the gastrointestinal tract with the help of the zeolite treatment. The direct effect of Ca zeolite at the absorption of glucose was monitored by measuring glucose concentration after eating and OGTT. Results have shown better disease control in diabetic mice treated with zeolite. By recording anesthetized animals with the microPET method, we showed that radioactively labeled glucose accumulated to a greater extent in the bladder if the mice received the zeolite probe. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the positive effect of applying of micro particles Ca zeolite A on blood glucose levels in mice with diabetes.
