Abstract

Association Epimedio Carpinetum betuli /Ht.1938/Borh 1963 grows in the colline belt of the Northern Croatia, at an elevation between 150 and 400 m. Mixed stands of sessile oak and common hornbeam, as well as the species Lucanus cervus (Linnaeus, 1758) belong to the NATURA 2000 ecological network for the conservation of endangered species and habitats of the European Union. Stag beetle is a saproxylic species which in its life cycle is dependent on dead wood materials that are part of the natural forest habitat, which are missing in the forests of intensive management. Our aim was to compare different stag beetle habitats and determine the best method for estimating the occurence of stag beetle, and thus assessment of forests as suitable habitats. We used three methods: transect method, traps with attractant and night examination of tree trunks. We have collected the largest number of individuals (90.1% of the total number of registered individuals) with transect method. If we compare the habitats, Medvednica provides better conditions for the stag beetle population. On these sites we recorded 185 individuals from 313 total recorded individuals.
