Abstract
This thesis examines the strategies of problem solving in mathematics education, with special emphasis on geometric problems. Thesis is divided into five chapters, and each chapter consists of several sections. In the first chapter we deal with mathematical problems, heuristics, problembased and heuristicbased learning. In the second chapter we investigate how the educational documents (PISA and NOK) deal with construction and solving of mathematical problems and with the application of technology in mathematics education. In the third chapter we study the important role of mathematician and mathematical educator George Pólya in development of methodology of problem solving. In this chapter we also find Pólya’s four steps, i.e. four basic principles of problem solving. In the fourth chapter we introduce various problem solving strategies. Furthermore, we determine the importance and effectiveness of knowing these strategies while solving problems. In the final, fifth chapter we solve geometric problems using the described methods and suggest possible ways of their implementation, with appropriate technology, in mathematics education.
