Abstract

A method, based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), for the determination of low levels (ng L-1) of thirteen urinary biomarkers of illegal drugs (heroin, cocaine, cannabis, amphetamine, methamphetamine, 3,4- methylenedioxyamphetamine) and therapeutic opioids (methadone, codeine) in municipal wastewater and sludge was developed. Effective enrichment of analytes from wastewater and sludge samples was achieved using solid-phase extraction and accelerated solvent extraction, respectively. The method was applied to study occurence and biogeochemical behaviour of investigated compounds in the municipal wastewater of several Croatian cities as well as to investigate the drug consumption paterrns and trends. Model experiments indicated rather high stability of the investigated compounds in sewer systems, while their elimination in the wastewater treatment plants varied in a wide range (4 to 98 %). Drug consumption estimates indicated cannabis, cocaine and heroin as the most widely abused drugs, however recently a significant increase in amphetamine-type drugs was observed.
