Abstract

Periphyton samples, with simultaneous measurement of physical and chemical variables, were collected during eight summer weeks in 2010, in seven-day intervals exposure of artificial substrates (glass slides) and from natural rock substrate from the area of faster and slower water flow. The conducted researches indicate high similarity in diatom composition among the springs, regardless of type and dynamics of colonization of the fouling surface as well as water flow velocity and stable physical and chemical factors. A total of 113 diatom taxa were found in the natural substrate fouling, and 98 in the artificial substrate fouling. Species Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kütz.) Czarnecki and Cocconeis placentula Ehrenberg dominate throughout the whole research period. The calculated high trophic level, obtained by using Rott's trophic diatom index, proved to be unsuitable for the spring areas, therefore it is recommended to redefine trophic diatom indices, by intercalibration of diatom species, in relation to the concentration of phosphorus, in order to have better assessment of the ecological status of the spring habitats.
