Electromagnetic induction is a very complex phenomenon. In order to understand it, we have to understand and relate a large number of physics concepts, e. g. the concept of magnetic field, magnetic flux, magnetic force, voltage and electric current. Procedural knowledge, such as the application of the right-hand rule for determination of the direction of magnetic force, is also necessary. Students find these concepts too abstract, so it is hard for them to master those concepts. Therefore serious difficulties occur while solving problems related with electromagnetic induction. This paper presents the results of the research of student understanding of electromagnetic induction and related key concepts of electromagnetism which was done on 66 third - year secondary school students. Students were administered a paper-and-pencil test containing eight items which required written explanations. The analysis of the test results indicated very weak student understanding of the investigated concepts and suggested that significant changes in the teaching approach to electromagnetism in secondary schools are necessary.
