Abstract

Industrial waste landfill of factory Petrokemija Kutina is situated near the city of Kutina, on the border of Nature Park Lonjsko polje, important swamp reservation area which is on the Ramsar list as an area of special interest. From 1987. until 2009. phosphogypsum, byproduct of mineral fertilizer production, was deposited on the landfill. It is estimated that during this time 6 million tons of phosphogypsum have been accumulated on the landfill. Although by law phosphogypsum is treated as a non-dangerous industrial waste, because of its origin and tendency to accumulate radioactive elements, it represents a potential environmental and health risk. In this research, samples of water, sediment from the landfill and feedstock were analyzed using geochemical and radiological methods as to determine the dynamics and movement of toxic and radioactive elements between feedstock, phosphogypsum and the environment.
