Abstract

The thesis presents the methods of ancient recording of numbers and quantities. About 500 BC a significant turn - at least for Western civilisation - in mathematics appeared as the influence of the Pythagoreans changed her into an abstract science in which claims are to be proven. Presented are the important characteristics of the earliest advanced civilizations. It is demonstrated that mathematics started to develop as a result of the practical human needs. The most important accomplishments of each civilization are described, and so are the historical sources. Among other things, it is described how the numbers were written in specific ancient cultures, and which numeral systems were used. Examples present methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and expressing fractions.
