Abstract

This thesis develops a model to determine the optimal product reliability parameter and production rate that achieves highest total profit for an imperfect production process. A model that more accurately describes the reality is obtained by relaxing the assumptions of the classical model of economic production quantity. In the first chapter concepts of inventory and inventory management are explained. A brief literature survey from Harris’ economic order quantity model till nowadays is given. In the second chapter notations and assumptions are provided. In contrast to the classical model of economic production quantity, it is assumed that the production system produces not only perfect, but also imperfect quality items. Imperfect quality items are reworked at a cost. Increasing demand function is considered, because demand by the customers may vary with time. In the third chapter the profit function whit the effect of inflation and time value of money is maximized by Euler-Lagrange’s method. Necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality of dynamic variables are developed. The model is tested on numerical examples in the fourth chapter. The conclusion is given in the last chapter.
