Abstract

Mycotoxins ochratoxin A (OTA) and citrinin (CIT) are often simultaneously present in food samples. Due to their nephrotoxic, hepatotoxic and carcinogenic effects, they are brought in connection with a disease called Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN). Mechanism of their cellular activity is related with formation of oxidative stress by some authors. The objective of this research was to determine if oxidative stress is a mechanism of toxic effect of OTA and CIT on experimental animals, and whether that effect changes if they are applied simultaneously. The research was conducted on male Wistar rats. In the group treated with OTA (250 µg/kg b.m. per day, for three weeks), a significant decrease in glutathione (GSH) concentration in kidneys and increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in liver were measured. In the group treated with CIT (20 mg/kg b.m., two days) there were no significant changes. In the group treated with OTA and CIT (250 µg/kg b.m. OTA per day, for three weeks + 20 mg/kg b.m. CIT last two days) a significant decrease in GSH concentration in brain and increase of MDA concentration in liver and kidneys were found. Additive effect of OTA and CIT on increase of MDA concentration in liver was noticed. Such results indicate to the possible mutual role of OTA and CIT in causing BEN.
