Abstract

In this paper are presented the results of surveys of students, interviewing of teachers and the analysis of direct observation of training sessions about the frequency of using teaching materials in the teaching of geography in the Krapina-Zagorje County. A comprehensive analysis showed that the teachers most commonly use a textbook and a wall map of the world as the basic teaching materials, and that the modern teaching materials such as thematic maps, photographs and videos are among the least used. The survey also examined the students' use of the certain teaching materials for learning geography, and the results are almost identical to the data obtained in the first part that relates to the teachers. The students most commonly use a textbook, their own notes and a workbook, and the modern materials the least, which clearly shows the influence of teachers and of their way of interpreting the teaching content to the students. The data collected by interviewing of the teachers and by attending the geography demonstration classes confirms the results obtained from the survey. The research results have an applicative value because they emphasize the importance of a more frequent usage of the modern teaching materials that are more familiar and interesting to the students.
