Abstract

The central city axis is a continuation of Zagreb's historic core, extending from Zrinjevac and Central Railway Station to the south, across the Freedom bridge and Sava to Novi Zagreb. Following the long tradition of planning this area, the central axis today becomes a basis for new projects. The research topic of this work is the spatial and functional change of the central city axis. Spatial planning documents and urban-historical elements have been analyzed in order to highlight importance of central axis in the historical expansion of the City of Zagreb. By mapping the central axis, the functional spatial structure is recorded in order to compare the current situation with the planned, thus the level of project implementation and existence of a development plan. Research results explain low level of project implementation and functional spatial heterogeneity, which indicates a partial approach in planning the new center of Zagreb. Threats to sustainable urban development have been disclosed as well.
