Phylogeny-ontogeny correlation has been in focusofbiologists for more than two centuries. Ernst Haeckel's recapitulation theory, the hourglass model of development,as well as thenewest study of the zebrafish (Danio rerio) development have all studied this correlation on animal embryogenesis. Relations between phylogeny and ontogeny in plants have, however,been completely unexplored. To assess this issue, I studied the phylogeny-ontogeny correlation inplants, a dicot Arabidopsis thaliana anda monocotZea mays, using phylostratigraphic analysisand the transcriptome age index (TAI). The obtained results showed that evolutionary oldest genes are expressedat the onset of the embryo maturation, revealing an hourglass patternin both organisms. However, another decrease in TAI values became apparentlater in the ontogeny, at the stageof Arabidopsis thaliana germination. This resultunderscores that a complete understanding of the phylogeny-ontogeny correlations in plantsrequires new expression datasets that cover complete ontogenies in major plant lineages.
