Abstract

Customs agreement between three neighboring countries - Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg - was finalized in 1947. when the Benelux Union was created. Although member states, due to cultural differences, initially opposed this idea, the creation of an economic union enabled them to recover and develop faster and intense. Today, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg are among the leading countries of the world. They are one of the most densely populated, socially and economically developed, and also most effectively organized and connected areas in Europe. Intensive development and a high degree of urbanization may cause problems like over construction, traffic saturation and environmental degradation. These problems are today successfully solved with effective spatial planning and development strategies, thanks to which the Benelux countries are leading among european and world countries.
