Abstract

Rural area of Baranja is characterized by advantageous geographical location, relief structure and climatic factors for agricultural development. Baranja is a traditional agrarian region. Limiting factors affecting on rural development are negative social, economic and demographic circumstances and marginality for years. Family farms are spatial units which include households and familiar properties intended for agricultural production. Besides the production, there are additional activities on family farms which enable better use of agricultural capacities and improve range of members activities, such as agrotourism. In developed countries of European Union, family farms are the main holders of rural development. Clear vision and systematic investment in family farms are neccessary for utilization of existing resources. Small and medium – sized family farms should become the framework of economic growth of rural area in Baranja.
