Abstract

This work is an attempt to prove the influence of understanding football on geographical knowledge. For this purpose a questionnaire was conducted among secondary-school students in Zagreb examining their knowledge about football and knowledge about geography, and correlative analysis is used to prove the hypothesis. Qualitative analysis is based on an examination of football fans’ motivation connected with the acquisition of geographical knowledge, philosophising the chronology of the geographical comprehension process and a presentation of betting house offers as a representative example of the source of geographical knowledge. The work ends by examining the position of sports geography within the scope of geography as a whole, and its indirect aim is to prove the importance of this subdiscipline.
