Abstract

The city of Varaždin has gone through some intense urban, demographic and industrial development in 20th and 21st century. This papers theme is about city development since 1945. It's a time in which Varaždin is a part of Yugoslavia and, after its breakdown, Croatia. It's also a time in which Varaždin has gone through two different political and economic systems of whom both made their marks on Varaždin and neighbouring parts. Paper is split in several time sequences which were specific in some way. Until 1959. Varaždin had to consolidate its society and economy because of World war II. Sixties and seventies were a time of most intense urban and industrial develpoment. Eighties were stagnant and nineties were turbulent due to Civil war. 21st century is characterised by leaving old industries (textile) and putting an accent on new industries like food industry or IT technologies. Varaždin is getting stronger as an educational centre as well. Through all of time captured in this paper Varaždin was a working, educational and cultural centre of Northern Crotia region.
