Abstract

High speed railways are increasing the availability and the functional connectivity of cities and countries, and also contribute to the integration of European territory. Because of these reasons high speed railways are an important factor in European Union common transport policy, therefore, certain high speed rail corridors are included among priority projects. High speed railways contribute to revitalization of rail transport in Europe, which is necessary because of increasing mobility of population. Size of the territory of the European Union complicate efficient transport connectivity by land, but high speed rail network greatly facilitates that connectivity. High speed rail network contribute to integration of the territory of the European Union, but there are only six cross-borders connections until today.This paper deals with the high speed network's role in integration and linking of the territory of the European Union. The paper deals with European Union common transport policy, with priorities and changes during twenty years of existence of common policy.
