Abstract

The subject of this paper is to analyze the spatial characteristics of Slavonia, which over time form the identity of the region. Spatial coverage of the historic region of Slavonia is complex because it is hard in any historical moment determine the precise boundaries of the region. Over time the geographic context of the term "Slavonia" was being narrowed. The foundation of today includes the Slavonia region can certainly be found in the Ottoman conquest Croatian and Slavonia. The front lines in the western part of today's Slavonia (about Ilove River), or separation of the two empires, becomes a transitional area between Slavonia and the rest of Croatia. The area which has been under Turkish occupation kept the Slavonian identity, while the western parts of gradually losing these characteristics. For the military conflicts can be said that the most important factors of identity formation in the region of Slavonia. Former cultural, ethnic and confessional heterogeneous image Slavonia created and formed by the end of the 19th century, by the end of the next century it is almost vanished.
