Abstract

The urban system of France is characterized by irregularity and the domination of Paris as a major political and economic center of the state. Thanks to the specific physical and social geographic factors, and a long tradition of development, today, Paris is considered to be a global city. Due to the irregular urban structure and the domination of Paris, there are regional differences that the French government is trying to reduce with a variety of territorial-administrative organizational measures, as well with investing money and using the EU funds. Balanced regional development, decentralization of the state and creating a polycentric urban system are solutions which France, as highly developed country, has to implement and which are the backbone for further development of the state.
