Abstract

Several aspects of mayfly ecology and faunistics were studied in various habitats in Croatia; I) Ecology of mayfly larvae was studied in the Mediterranean rivers (Cetina and Ruda) and a continental barrage lake system (Plitvice Lakes NP) during a one-year period. A total of 22 and 15 mayfly taxa were recorded, respectively, with the highest diversity in the lower reaches of the Cetina River and lower streams in the Plitvice Lakes NP. Mayfly community composition and structure were mostly influenced by the environmental factors (pH and water temperature), habitat type and/or the position along the river course, and only to some degree by the substrate type. Mayflies showed to be sensitive to habitat alterations (river regulations), however, no obvious influence was detected at sites not directly altered, most likely due to specific karst hydromorphology. II) Mayfly emergence was studied for 24 months in the Plitvice Lakes NP. It was seasonal, mainly occurring between March and November. Males and females emerged synchronously, with males outnumbering females in most taxa. Water temperature was the main factor influencing the timing of emergence. III) Mayfly fauna was sampled on 171 sites from 2003 to 2013. Including literature data, a total of 79 taxa are listed in Croatia. 29 species were first records for Croatia, and 15 species for Dinaric western Balkan ecoregion. Based on the mayfly fauna, sites were primarily grouped by the ecoregion, followed by the habitat type. Some taxa with complex taxonomy and morphology were recorded (e.g. Baetis cf. nubecularis, Rhithrogena gr. diaphana, Rh. gr. semicolorata).
