Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine diversity and community structure of the freshwater snails from the Gojačka Dobra River springs. Field research was conducted from June 2008 to May 2009 at eight locations which include the main source Gojak (D1) and the source stream of the river Gojačka Dobra (D2), four small springs along its course (IZV-SKU, IZV-GOR, IZV-TOM, D5) and the sources of its major tributaries, Bistrica (B1) and Ribnjak (R1). At all locations macroinvertebrate samples were collected from the rocky ground, while at the stations D2, B1 and R1 samples were also taken from the moss. The exception was the source of the Gorinci where the muddy substrate was prevailing. Snails were separated from the benthos sample in the laboratory and then were determined to the species level. Population density of each species was determined based on the number of individuals. In this study, a total of 13 species of freshwater snails was found and the dominant species at all investigated locations was Sadleriana fluminensis. At the locations D2, B1 and R1 greater number of individuals was recorded on the rocky ground. The analysis of functional feeding guilds showed that scrapers and detritivores were equally present, while presence of other groups was negligible. Margalef's richness index was the highest on the stone substrate of the location D2. The highest values of the Shannon’s and Simpson’s diversity index, and the Pielou's evenness index were found on the same location, but on the moss substrate. Cluster analysis of similarity showed grouping of sources Ribnjak and Bistrica on one side, and the main source Gojak and smaller sources along Gojačka Dobra on the other side. The resulting data provide a significant contribution to a better knowing of the fauna of freshwater snails of the Gojačka Dobra River, and also provide the basis for tracking changes resulting from the construction of HPP Lešće.
