Abstract

Sarracenia is a genus of carnivorous plants widespread in North America and is characterized by leaves modified into pitchers which lore, hunt and digest insects. The aim of this study was to analyze the variance in photosynthetic pigments and phenolic compounds as well as photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant activity in different pitcher parts of morphologically different hybrids. Four parts of the pitcher – operculum, “wing”, pitcher upper part and pitcher lower part were analyzed in morphologically different Sarracenia hybrids (A, B and C). The photosynthetic efficiency of operculum and pitcher upper part was lower than in pitcher lower part and “wing”, especially in hybrid B. However, in hybrid C the higher rate of photosynthesis was noticed. Hybrid B also has higher amount of chlorophyll and carotenoids in “wing” and pitcher lower part compared to the other two hybrids. Results indicate that the amount of phenolic compounds and photosynthetic pigments is related to coloration of pitcher parts, and therefore participating in attraction and trapping insects. The higher amount of phenolic compounds, especially anthocyanin, is measured in operculum and pitcher upper part, which are red-colored and involved more in carnivory, while amount of chlorophyll and photosynthetic efficiency were higher in “wing” that is green-colored and is involved more in photosynthesis. Antioxidant activity was high in all pitcher parts of all three hybrids.
