Abstract

Currently, in Croatia 4 native freshwater crayfish species are present. Those are: Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus, Austropotamobius pallipes and Austropotamobius torrentium. Also presence of 3 alien invasive species is recorded: Orconectes limosus, Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus fallax f. virginalis. Non-indigenous (alien) species are characterized by higher fecundity, higher aggressiveness and resistance to crayfish plague, which has negative affects onto the native species that are not resistant to this disease. All invasive species are found in the inland of Croatia, in rivers of the Black Sea basin, where they are in contact with Astacus astacus and Astacus leptodactylus causing the reduction of their population. Apart from that, abundant invasive crayfish populations can cause disappearance of other aquatic animal and plant species. Negative anthropogenic influence is also significant in the form of pollution and degradation od habitat. Removing the invasive crayfish from freshwater habitats by traps has been shown as the best way for regulation of the invasive species spreading in Croatia. Recent discovery of marbled crayfish on the lake Šoderica presents new potential threat for freshwater ecosystems because of its parthenogenetic reproduction.
