Abstract

Prisoner’s dilemma is very simplified projection of real interactions. It is a "game" in which players choose between cooperation and defection where they don’t know which strategy will choose their mate. This model is applied in different areas, but this paper focuses on its role in ecology. The prisoner’s dilemma in ecology is applied as a model that explains the existence of altruistic behavior in living organisms seemingly as evolutionary unacceptable because natural selection prefers egotistical behavior. However, studies have shown that altruistic behavior is often necessary in order to avoid penalties; especially in situations where the interactions between two organisms are iterated.
