Abstract

The thesis was formed as part of research for regional collection plan of five taxonomic groups of birds. For this purpose questionnaire was formed and sent to 297 zoos in European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. This provided data of animal collection and their management. Data were obtained directly from the curator of the zoo. The analysis includes presence of endangered species in the collection, criteria types for species selection, education value and importance of the regional collection plan and the issue of popularizing less attractive. The results indicate that half of the surveyed zoo gardens selected they use regional collection plan most of the time, which indicates the importance of this document. However attractiveness turned to be leading criteria in species selection (on a scale of 11 proposed criteria) and 26 % of zoos would not have accept less attractive specie in their collection. This is the first systematic study of species protection through management of collections, and as such represents an important contribution to evaluate the work and function of zoos.
