Abstract

In scope of this thesis the magneto-optical effects that appear in atomic medium, when both optical and magnetic fields are present simultaneously, were examined. The results, presented in this thesis, represent the extension of extensive work on study of velocity selective optical pumping of alkali atoms that are induced by optical frequency comb excitation. Velocity selective optical pumping is predominately determined by atomic hyperfine structure therefore it is important to examine the impacts of the magnetic field on the optical pumping processes of ground level hyperfine Zeeman components. Magnetooptical effects were observed in the interaction of Rb atoms with resonant cw laser radiation as a result of atomic orientation in the optical pumping processes of ground level hyperfine Zeeman components in the external magnetic field. Special focus was given to the examination of coherent accumulation of excited states populations processes. They were investigated through the two-step excitation interaction of room temperature Doppler broadened rubidium vapor with optical frequency comb. It has been demonstrated that specific values of fR will lead to the velocity selective double resonance and the enhancement of two-photon signals. By changing the external magnetic fields values, the atomic energy structure changes together with resonance conditions in relation to the frequency comb spectrum. In the last part of this thesis, the results of experimental investigation of Zeeman components optical pumping effects, induced by interaction with circularly polarized fs laser, were presented. Femtosecond laser beam serves as optical pump beam that induces the significant anisotropy of the medium. If such optically prepared medium is examined by linearly polarized probe beam, the effects of rotation of probe beam polarization can be observed. The magneto-optical effects induced by interaction of atoms with femtosecond laser were, as far as it is known, experimentally studied for the first time.
