Major histocompatibility system (MHC) has a central role in the regulation of immune response. MHC diversity is essential for the survival of the species because it allows for the recognition of a wide spectrum of pathogens. That diversity evolved under selective pressure, so MHC genes can be used as markers for the study of adaptive evolution in populations or species. The wild boar (Sus scrofa) belongs to the order of Artiodactyla, Suidae family and Sus genus. It originate from South-East Asia, and today its distribution extends to many oceanic islands and all continents except Antarctica. The goal of this study was to determine the variability of MHC class II DQA gene in the wild boar. In tissue samples from 53 wild boars from the area of Medvednica a total of three DQA alleles were found, of which all three were known from previous studies. The rates of non-synonymous and synonymous substitutions indicate that the maintenance of the diversity on DQA locus is under positive selection. Results of this study will be used in further investigation of correlation between the MHC haplotypes and specific parasitic diseases of wild boars that will contribute to understanding of coevolution of the host and pathogen and maintenance of genetic diversity in animal populations.
