The sounds that rodents make in the ultrasonic part of the spectrum are an important component of their behavior. Research of the hitherto unknown vocal repertoire of the endemic rodent Dinaromys bogdanovi was conducted on 11 adult specimens in the enclosures of the Zagreb Zoo. The goal of the research was to detect and analyse specie`s vocalisation and to determine their usage and function by exposing test animals to certain environmental conditions within the testing terrariums. The sounds were recorded with an UltraMIc 200K microphone using the program SeaWave, and sonogram analysis was conducted by the program BatSound. By using direct measurements obtained within the sonogram and the available literature, it was concluded that there are single-component signals with frequency modulation and multiple-component signals which involved frequency steps. Eleven types of signals and their respective subtypes were determined. In various biological contexts, this animals use certain amounts of signals within the types. It was determined that during social contact between the specimens all of the types occurred in great abundance, while the amount of sounds decreased to a minimum during the claiming of territory or scent presentation by other specimens. Males vocalized more than females within each setting. Primary usage of vocalization during social contacts between conspecifics suggests that vocalization is an important part of interspecies communication. The understanding of vocalization will be a contribution to the findings from the areas of biology of species and behaviour, making research of natural populations in the field more successful.
