Research of dispersal is important for understanding geographic distribution, dynamics and structure, ecology and evolution of a population. Natal dispersal is more common than reproductive and occurs in young individuals. Individuals of many species are faithful to their nesting place, therefore reproductive dispersion is not common and usually it takes place after a poor reproductive success or loss of a partner. Despite the fact that many species expressed philopatry, natal dispersal is still common, and the direction and the distance at which an individual dispersed depends on the population density, habitat quality, sex, the probability of inbreeding or dominance among individuals. The White stork is a migratory bird and regular breeding species in Croatia. The aim of this research was to analyse the natal dispersal by using the resightings of colour-ringed individuals and to compare natal and reproductive dispersal in that species. The effect of the number of nests in settlements, and the size of settlements on the distance and direction of dispersal in the Nature Park was studied. It was found that storks are dispersing from settlements with a small number of nests to settlements with large number of nests and that dispersal doesn’t depend on the size of the settlement. In White stork, natal dispersal is more common than reproductive. Breeding populations in Croatian are associated with breeding populations in Hungary through natal dispersal. Migration might have an influence on natal dispersal of this species.
