A need for better water management led to implementation of ecological methods in the assessment of water quality alongside physico-chemical standards. According to Water Framework Directive (WFD), the phytoplankton community is an essential indicator of changes in water ecosystems, which diatoms make a significant portion of. Phytoplankton was sampled from four deep karstic lakes: Visovačko and Kozjak (in 2009), and Vransko and Prošće (in 2010). Results of abundance and biomass of phytoplankton, and physico-chemical parameters of each lake were made in the context of ESV project, and were used for statistical analysis of ecological valences of centric diatoms. The cleaned samples were used for taxonomic analysis of species with the help of LM and SEM. The descriptor species of functional groups of diatoms (class Coscinodiscophyceae and Mediophyceae) were found, which according to Reynolds classification belong to the codons A, B and C. Other FGs, which were present in a significant percentage, are: E, Lo, D and P. The results were compared with the current findings in order to improve the monitoring and preservation of sensitive and valuable karst resources.
