Abstract

Although hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a viral disease caused by hantaviruses, it is primarily considered as an immune-mediated disease. Cytokines secreted by immune cells, as a response to proinflammatory signals, play an important role in pathogenesis of HFRS. Interleukin 15 (IL-15) affects proinflammatory and protective immune reactions to pathogens on the level of innate and adaptive immunity. The aim of this study was to detect IL-15 in the peripheral circulation of patients with HFRS, as a potential indirect indicator of proinflammatory and protective immune reactions development. For detection of IL-15 in serum of patients, we used multiplex bead-based immunoassay using Luminex® technology. The viraemia in HFRS patients was determined using RT-PCR and the amplicons were quantified by qPCR. In this study we detected low levels of IL-15 in the early acute phase of HFRS after which the values rapidly fall to undetectable levels. Higher values of IL-15 were observed in patients with more severe HFRS suggesting prognostic value of this cytokine in assessing HFRS severity. The correlation of IL-15 with several clinical laboratory parameters is demonstrated here, while there was no correlation with the viral load. In future research, for a better understanding of the immunopathogenesis of HFRS, the role of IL-15 in the proliferation and differentiation of NK cells should be investigated.
