Coexistence of two organisms, a symbiosis, may be so intimate that one symbiont lives inside the cells of another. In such a case we speak of endosymbiosis. Zooxanthellae are unicellular photosynthetic algae that are endosymbionts to many sea cnidarians, molluscs and even some protozoa. In this mutualistic relationship, the algae take nutrients from the waste matter of their symbiont and the symbiont provides them with a habitat. On the other hand, the symbiont uses energy and carbon-rich compounds which the algae produce through photosynthesis. This seminar paper provides examples of symbioses of Zooxanthellae with various sea organisms, and their role in such relationships is explained. The topic of symbiosis of Zooxanthellae with stony corals is addressed in more detail for its immense importance in preserving biodiversity of sea life.
