Abstract

This paper contains military-geographical analysis of the Medak Pocket operation. The analysis was conducted using GIS tools. Field analysis was based on determining relief potential index and terrain mobility of the observed space using standard military procedure OCOKA (O – Observation and Fields of Fire, C – Cover and Concealment, O – Obstacles, K – Key Terrain, A – Avenues of Approach). The analysis was conducted in the wider Medak Pocket military operation area. It included classification of terrain categories in relation with cover and mobility with the aim to determine the level of protection and mobility provided by the ground. Defined model was comprised of twelve parameters of observed space: visibility, fire area, slope exposition, concave relief forms, land use, density of valley networks and the density of sinkholes for analysis of protection, and: slope, drainage system, vegetation, average precipitation and cultural features for the mobility analysis. The parameters are compared with the zones under the control of the opposing military forces and presented via thematic maps.
