Pollution of aquatic ecosystems can cause changes on molecular and cellular level in organisms inhabiting them They usually occur before toxic action becomes apparent in physiology of the entire organism. In this study, oxydative damage of macromolecules and DNA damage were examined using caged painter's mussels (Unio pictorum L.) as test organism. Mussels were cage exposed at several locations on Vrana lake (Channel Kotarka, Lateral channel, Lake centre, Prosika). Mussels were collected at the reference site (Draganići), and exposed during spring and autumn 2011. Biomarkers of genotoxicity (Comet assay and micronucleus-test) and biochemical indicators of stress (total proteins, malondialdehyde, carbonyl groups) were analysed on mussels exposed in Vrana Lake and the ones from the reference site. DNA damage and oxidative damage of macromolecules were recorded on Channel Kotarka and Lateral channel which indicates presence of genotoxicants as well asagents which cause oxidative damage in Vrana Lake.
