Abstract

The effect of quercetin on green hydra Hydra viridissima Pallas and endosymbiotic algae in laboratory conditions was studied. Quercetin is the most studied flavonoid and its the best described property is its ability to act as antioxidant. But in some cases quercetin has prooxidative properties. Green hydras were treated with four concentrations of quercetin for three days and compared to control group of animals. The experiment was performed three times. By the use of light microscopy, morphometry and macroscopic observations morphological, cyto-histological and behavioural changes of green hydra were observed. Cell viability, division, shape and size of cells and chloroplasts, the level of damages and intensity of green colour in relation to the concentration of the toxicant were observed. The results showed distinguished morphological changes on the hydra body as well as behavioural changes: depigmentations, migrations, deformations, disordered locomotion, hardly reacting to the mechanical stimuli and mortality. Also, different histopatological changes on the hydra body were detected. Algae showed changes in size and shape of cells and chloroplast and intensity of green colour. Concentration of 0,25 g/L occured to be treshold concentration in which intensive sublethal and behavioural changes but also changes in morphological and histological structure were detected. Concentration of 0,3 g/L lead to irreversibile changes and ca. LC50. On the basis of the achieved results, the most imporatant conclusion was that quercetin in applied conditions showed possible prooxidative effect on green hydra.
