Abstract

This work identifies and analyses discrepancies in the levels of the social and economic development between different parts of the Sisak-Moslavina County. While the emphasis of this paper is on Banovina region, regional disparities between the northern (Moslavina and Sisak Posavina) and the southern (Banovina) parts of the County are also considered through investigation of the historical and recent demographic and economic development. First part of the paper focuses on analysing the historical trends of the total population change in the 1857 - 2011 period, and dynamic changes in birth and death rates and age-sex structure. Furthermore, second part of this work presents the economic development as the consequence of the war and restructuring of the economy of the Sisak-Moslavina County in the era of economic transition. This led to conclusions regarding the series of factors that influenced intensive depopulation, negative natural population change and old age structure with low levels of economic activity.
