Abstract

This paper examines the development of the Chinese city of Shenzhen following the establishment of a special economic zone in 1980 by the former paramount leader of the People's Republic of China Deng Xiaoping. The SEZ was established as part of the reforms introduced to build up a socialist market economy. This made the city fully open to foreign investments, distinguishing it from other parts of China, which were part of the Communist regime, and marked the beginning of the city’s urban and economic transformation. Prior to the designation of the Special Economic Zone, the city was a small fishing village. Today its population stands at over 10 000 000 and it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
